Magnesium - an essential mineral that you probably don’t give much thought to, especially if you eat a healthy diet. However, this simple substance applied to the skin can do wonders to help relieve the stress, tension, stiffness and pain that brings you down - especially when combined with massage!

Most Americans do not consume enough magnesium, and the health effects can be more detrimental than you think: moderate to severe magnesium deficiency has been associated with increased risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Minor magnesium deficiency can manifest as persistent muscle tension and pain; muscle cramps, spasms or twitching; stiffness and joint aches; and skin dryness and itching. Sound familiar?

One of the simplest ways to get more magnesium in your body safely is to get it through your skin! Bathing in Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) has been shown to increase magnesium levels inside the body. Another way is through use of magnesium oil spray on the skin, which works faster, and has also been proven to aid in detoxification and reduce inflammation. The benefits of massage overlap with some of the benefits of magnesium - increased relaxation, decreased tension, lower blood pressure - making magnesium massage therapy an excellent remedy for stress.

At Mochi, we love to use magnesium spray on clients who come in sore from a weekend adventure or killer workout, are stressed beyond belief and can’t sleep, or who have high levels of tension and stiffness. We notice instant muscle relaxation and signs of inflammation relief when the magnesium is applied, which makes our bodywork much more effective - meaning you leave our studio feeling much closer to 100%!
