what you need to know before your session

What types of massage does Mochi offer?

We practice massage as medicine. Mochi therapists offer intelligent and intuitive massage and bodywork.

We realize there are a multitude of modalities, and along with that, varying perceptions of what it means to get a massage. To be clear: while we are a fan of aesthetics, we are most definitely not a spa.

All of our therapists have put in long hours of study, and have been practicing for years. We each draw from a combination of modalities: Structural integration, Swedish, Shiatsu, sports/deep tissue, Thai, Active Release Technique, NKT, trigger point and bioenergetic healing.

I'm a bodywork noob. What do I need to know?

Welcome! On the morning of your appointment, stay hydrated. Stick with light foods within an hour or two of your session. Since we don't offer shower facilities, show up to your appointment fresh and clean (to the best of your ability). So that we have time to talk about your specific needs, injuries or concerns, please arrive a few minutes early for your first session. Together, we'll assess the focus of the session. Then, we'll leave the room and give you a few minutes to undress to your level of comfort and slip in beneath the sheets of our heated table. You will be appropriately draped at all times. And from time to time during the session, we'll be checking in with you on level of pressure and to see if your session is going swell.

Shoots! I need to cancel. Will I be charged?

To avoid being charged for the full amount of your session, please let us know 24 hours in advance if you will be unable to make your scheduled appointment. If your appointment is booked the same day you call, please be sure that you can make it before you book, as we may ask you to pay for canceling if we turned down someone else for that time. This is done in fairness both to clients who would otherwise have wanted the appointment as well as the therapist, who is not paid if they do not perform the session.

OK. How do I go about cancel my appointment?

It's easy. Go back to your email confirmation - the one you received when you first booked the appointment. Scrolling down to the bottom, you'll find a link to cancel within the body of the email. Of course, you can always text, email or call your therapist. Contact information is also in your email confirmation.

Oops, I'm running late! Will I receive my full session?

If you are late to your session you will receive whatever time is left in your appointment. Due to our schedule we may be unable to extend your session beyond your original appointment time. And on the very rare occasion that we are running late (due to scheduling or unforseen circumstances), we will, of course, give you the full duration of your session, or reduce your charges.

during your session

I'm a bit shy. Is there a robe?

Nope. Fear not, however! We will ensure that you are appropriately draped at all times during your massage session. Once we've had a chance to chat about the focus of the session, we will leave you alone in the studio for a few minutes to disrobe to your level of comfort (yes, keep your underthings on if you are so inclined) and settle in on the massage table beneath the top sheet, belly down, face down in the face cradle. Note: When receiving Active Release Technique and Structural Integration work, you'll want to dress like you're going to the gym.

What types of lotions, creams, and oils do you use?

Only the best, of course. We stick to the all-natural, high-quality, non-smelly stuff. Sacred Earth massage creams for general deep tissue massage work. Sustainably-sourced raw shea butter for fascia work.  Our essential oils are produced to high standards, and are often organic. Of course, it's always a good thing to let us know if you have any allergies. We'll adjust accordingly.

Is breathing important during the session?

Absolutely. During the session, you'll be encouraged to practice breathing gently and deeply to and from your belly to induce relaxation. You may want to visualize sending breath to the area of the body where work is being done, so as to help muscles, fascia and nervous system unwind, open and release. Note: At times while face down, you may experience congestion due to the draining of sinuses and such. We offer tissue, camphorous remedies and magical pressure points that may help you breathe easy once again.

Something's not quite right. Should I say something?

Yes, you should say something. We always appreciate your requests and feedback. While we may be the experts on bodywork, you are the expert on you. Just about everything from the music and volume to the angle of your face rest is adjustable. Your therapist will never be offended if you make a request to turn up the heat, pile on another blanket, adjust the table or music during your session.

What if I prefer my session without draping?
It is our policy to drape you properly at all times during your session.

after your session

Whoa. I am a space case. Am I OK?

It's fairly normal to feel a bit dizzy or spacey after a massage. Your body may feel lighter. (Enjoy!) We'll offer you a beverage, and leave you in the studio alone for a few minutes to reflect on how your body feels, stretch, and get dressed. When you're ready, pop the door open and we'll be there to chat briefly with you about post-session care specific to your needs.

Post-session care is important! After the session, drink plenty of water to keep body systems flowing, and assist your newly recharged circulatory system in flushing out any cell waste released during the massage. If at all possible, avoid strenuous activity. Relax and allow your body to integrate the work. Gentle movement is fine. You may experience some soreness in the day or two after your session, especially if you don't receive regular bodywork.

If you're dealing with muscle inflammation, we strongly suggest a luxurious post-massage bath of epsom salts: high in magnesium to reduce inflammation; helps to boost seratonin levels. Uh - what's not to love?

What forms of payment are acceptable?
Cash. Credit Card. (VISA, Mastercard, AMEX, Discover), and Paypal (previous to the appointment).

Is it appropriate to tip or not tip?
In an expensive town such as San Francisco, our hardworking therapists deeply appreciate and accept gratuities. However, it is always a matter of preference. We appreciate your decision to work with us at Mochi Massage + Bodywork.

Dur. I think I left something behind at the studio. What to do?!
It's OK. Just send your therapist a quick email, and we'll make arrangements to get it back into your care as soon as we can.

I have a question about etiquette that isn't covered in this FAQ.
We'll do our best to give you the answers you need.  Contact us.
